Environmental Science – Biodiversity Practice Test

Incorporating diverse crop rotations is critical for maintaining biodiversity in agriculture because it enhances ecosystem resilience and promotes soil health. Diverse crop rotations create a more balanced ecosystem, allowing for various species of plants to thrive. This diversity helps to control pests and diseases naturally, reducing the need for chemical pesticides and fostering a more robust agricultural environment.

Crop rotation also contributes to nutrient cycling and soil fertility. Different crops have varying nutrient requirements and can replenish the soil in ways that benefit subsequent crops, enhancing overall agricultural productivity. This practice encourages the proliferation of beneficial organisms in the soil and aboveground ecosystems, leading to increased biodiversity. Additionally, a diverse agricultural system can better withstand environmental stressors, such as climate variability or disease outbreaks, compared to monoculture systems.

On the other hand, practices such as using monocultures or limiting variety in farming techniques typically reduce biodiversity, leading to increased vulnerability in crops and greater dependence on chemical inputs like pesticides. Therefore, the practice of diverse crop rotations stands out as essential for promoting and maintaining biodiversity in agricultural systems.
